Physiology is all about the normal functioning of the human body. The basic functional unit of
the body is the cell. 99% of the structure of the cells is made up of hydrogen, oxygen, carbon and
nitrogen all which are atoms with anionic forms. In a normal physiological adult approximately
60% of the body weight is water. The percentage is higher in pediatric age group. Water is made
up of hydrogen bonds that link up the oxygen and the hydrogen together thus derangement of
hydrogen bonding results in derangement in total body water which leads to structural and
physiological disturbances because water is not only a major component of cells but also forms
the largest portion of extracellular fluids in the body. Essentially all the other aforementioned
atoms form molecules mainly via covalent and hydrogen bonds. Most of them form the storage
forms of energy in the body in terms of sugars and fats. Thus anything that alters the formation
of covalent bonds among these molecules alters both the physiologic and anatomic status of the
body. Ionic bonds are formed between cations and anions. Though present, the amount of cations
in the body is quite small and thus fewer ionic bonds are found in the body as compared to the
other two types of bond and so their significance is lower.
