The Black-White Achievement Gap
The article on the black-white achievement gap focuses on the gap of achievement of
both elementary and secondary education between the black students and the white students. It
shows the gap trends between these two groups of students. According to this article, the trend of
the gap has narrowed since the 1970s until the 1980s when only small changes both positive and
negative were experienced. The article focuses on the causative factors that may have influenced
the stopping of the narrowing of the gap. The factors shows why the black students are poor in
their education compared to the white students. The factors range from the family and the
neighborhood to the ancestral heritage. First, most of the black students are raised in one parent
family due to the decline of the nuclear family, especially in areas of concentrated poverty. This
results to low resources to support and nurture the children. The achievement of such children is
affected since they are raised by one parent. Secondly, most of the black children are raised in
neighborhoods that are concentrated with poverty. Such communities or neighborhoods tend not
to have quality health or recreational facilities for the black children. Children in such areas also
attend schools hungry due to lack of meals. Finally, since the ancestors of the black families
were slaves, they tend to have low family net worth compared with the white families.
Poverty concentration is the best framework that explains this social problem of gap
achievement between blacks and whites. The reason behind this framework being the best, it can
also be turned around much easily through good policies as compared to other frameworks such
as family dynamics. There are various factors why poverty is much concentrated in black
neighborhoods where the black children are raised. These factors led to the isolation of the black
neighborhoods from the rest of the mainstream community and the status quo has remained so
for so long. These factors have been in existence largely because of well intentioned policies as
