Doubtless, when the notion of child abuse, a section of people may think that it is a recent
phenomenon because it came to light during the 20

Century. While it is true that the realization
of child abuse in its numerous forms, including sexual abuse, physical abuse, neglect, and
emotional abuse, has been extensively addressed and recognized in the developed nations more
than in the developing ones, child abuse has always existed for thousands of years, with children
being beaten and mistreated under the assumption that they are a property of their parents’. With
this notion in mind, it suffices to note that this paper will explore the aspect of child abuse from a
historical perspective, an overview of the concept of parens patriae, the historical origin of
parens patriae, and its use in modern juvenile courts.
Foremost, it is vital to note that deformed or unwanted children were often abandoned in
the early civilizations. The rituals of infants to appease the gods took place in the Greek, Roman,
Aztec, Egypt, and Carthaginian societies. Recovered skeletons of babies and proof of child
sacrifice in Carthage are examples of child abuse during this period in this society (Schwartz et
al., 2012). For instance, in Roman society, the father was expected to have absolute control over
his family, even to the degree that he could kill his children if they disobeyed him. His control
was absolute and unquestioned. In the Greek and Roman societies, sexual abuse of minors was a
common and accepted practice. Children were often sold as prostitutes and slaves. In Europe,
during the Middle Ages normal healthy babies but who were unwanted were made to work as
apprentices or offered to work in convents or the monasteries. During this period, the murder of
infants was a common practice. The Roman Church played a role in the murder of children after
its declaration that all deformed infants were evil omens and that they resulted from their
