THE DEBATE ON GMOs 2
GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) are made up with engineered material with the
aim of ameliorating the initial organism. The GMO seeds have commonly been used in corn,
cotton and soybeans grown in the United States. However, there exists a controversial debate on
whether GMOs are safe or not. As much as GMOs are associated with various benefits to the
farming industry and human health, there exist some negatives. The conclusion of the safety of
GMOs cannot just be arrived at without looking at the pros and the cons.
To start us off are the pros. Seeds are changed genetically, which makes them more
resistant to insects and thus producing healthier crops. This minimizes the chances in crop failure
and thus making them resist extreme weather conditions. The GMO foods through modification
have added more nutrients like vitamins and hence lead to better nutrition. These foods have also
been proven to have additional taste that is sweeter and of high quality. This is in accordance to
Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations. GMO animals and crops require less
time, land, chemicals and machinery therefore lowering the rate of environmental pollution.
Productivity is also enhanced because the cost of production has greatly been reduced. One
reason as to this is that the GMO generate their insecticides and herbicides (Parekh 2004).
On the contrary, research has shown that GMOs have exhibited some negative effects.
According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nation, the genes are able to
migrate and pass on the characteristics to members of other species or even the same species.
The tragedy is when the herbicide-resistance genes are passed on to the weeds and hence making
them resistant and difficult to control. Research in IOWA State University shows that GMO van
lower the effectiveness of antibiotics since they have inbuilt qualities of antibiotics. The Brown
