Mini-Paper: The New Jim Crow
According to Michelle Alexander, What Role has the War on Drugs Played in the Rise of
the Era Mass Incarceration, and the Incarceration of Black Americans and African
Americans in particular?
In respect to Michelle Alexander, the mass explosion in enslaved people of color has resulted
from drug convictions in the United States. Two-thirds of the federal imprisonments originated
from unlawful and unethical drug warfare's which only targeted the black Americans and the
minority groups in the United States (Alexander pg. 11). According to this report, the drug war
goal was not targeted at delving the drug kingpins; much of the findings established denote that
over eighty percent of the arrest at times amounted from possession of less harmful substances
and marijuana or tobacco, with most of them being prevalent to the middle class and of poor
minority members.
Much of the claimed drug war is concentrated on the poor minority groups despite all people
engaged in the illicit sale and use. The studies show in late 2000, most of the prisons in the
United States accommodated over eighty percent of African Americans convicted of drug
offenses. The compromised laws favoring the whites in the fight against drugs act as a source of
increased incarceration among people of color. The unreasonable search and seizures conducted

by the discriminatory police officers discriminate against the African Americans and increase
their incarceration at the prisons centers.
Why does she refer to this Current State of Affairs as "The New Jim Crow?"
Michelle identifies the longstanding unethical and highly biased constitution in the new United
States era as "The New Jim Crow?" Own criminal justice systems favor racial disparities and
discriminations due to the complexity of the Supreme Court. According to Alexander, the fourth
amendments are less effective for they only protect against unreasonable search and seizure. The
law encourages unethical and highly biased police operations as much of the stop and frisks
operations target people of color and the minority poor groups. "The Supreme Court had begun
steadily unraveling Fourth Amendment protections against stops, interrogations, and seizures in
bus stops, train stations, schools, workplaces, airports, and on sidewalks in a series of cases
starting in the early 1980s.These aggressive sweep tactics in poor communities of color are now
as accepted as separate water fountains were several decades ago" (Alexander pg. 11).
What are the Lasting Impacts of Incarceration on an Individual’s Rights and
Opportunities within American Society?
Michelle denotes the critical effects of incarceration on individuals; many of the individuals of
color who are incarcerated are more often discriminated against in their society. Studies revealed
that incarcerated individuals were more discriminated against as compared to others. Individuals
convicted of a felony in the white-dominated cultures are more likely to receive housing,
employment discrimination, and even end up being expelled from the jury (Walker pg. 845). The
people's freedom is never freed as much of the recently incarcerated individuals faced higher
chances of being cycled in a span of fewer than three years. There is much inequality in social,
