I Used to Be a Human Being: An endless bombardment of news and gossip and images has
rendered us manic information addicts. It broke me. It might break you, too.
Do you see the constant stream of content as beneficial?
With every invention on invention, the first generation that comes into contact with a new
invention grapples with ways of accommodating it into their lives in such a manner that is not
destructive. The same is happening with information technology and the internet. The content
that people are coming into contact with today owing to the invention of the smartphone is
extraordinarily big. It is, therefore, no wonder that people have deemed content to be harmful
and curtailing the conventional forms of relaying information, human contact. However, one can
also look at it differently. Although the same content is responsible for cutting people away from
each other and hampering human contact, it is because of this information that innovation is
possible. The content being streamed today will make it possible for new ways to be invented of
addressing social issues. It would be deceptive for someone to claim to be completely cut off and
not benefitting from content. It is possible for people to access news and information
immediately, give feedback and communicate faster than it was in the last decade. The
smartphone has enabled people to be in contact with one another and offer the concept of instant
gratification. When the cable TV was invented, people were concerned that a lot of time would

be spend in front of the TV making it impossible for people to do anything constructive.
However, society always finds a way to adjust, which will happen with the information age.
Do you ever feel overwhelmed by SM?
Yes, in more ways than one social media can be overwhelming. It is not possible to go
more than two hours without logging in on Facebook, retweeting a resonating thought, liking or
posting a photograph on Instagram or a story on Snapchat. All this information coming in can be
overwhelming. It is not easy to put away all gadgets away and pretend that that is not equally
overwhelming. Taking in all the information on social media is overwhelming. It is, however,
more overwhelming to cut yourself off from the information and purport to live in an
unconnected world. What one can do is try to be disciplined on how much content they are
willing to take in per day.
How would you handle "detoxing" yourself from SM?
Social media is an aspect of life today that seems to be taking over people’s lives. The
amount of time spent on social media is worrying. People have come up with ways of
detoxifying’ themselves from social media. Some people jog, meditate, exercise, taking trips to
out of range locations and generally being disciplined enough to stay away from social media out
of one’s volition. This has proven to be difficult considering almost all millennials are connected
to the internet and swiping on Tinder, posting a story or tweeting something every minute. To be
the only one not doing these things requires a lot of self-control and discipline. I have come up
with a way ofdetoxifying’ from social media by creating a personal timetable. Although it is
difficult to adhere to, I am on social media for thirty minutes at most every day. Fifteen minutes
in the morning and an additional fifteen in the evening. During the day, I have conditioned
