1. Question One
This paper will look at the aspect of Performance management at the University of Ghana
in Legon, Ghana in their Balme Library, and most specifically on performance planning.
Performance Planning is a crucial process in any firm. Performance Planning is defined as the
process where organizations get in a process of planning and putting together the objectives of
the organization and also the individual employees and which guide them into the financial year.
This is an important process as it ensures that employees are well acquainted with the process of
performance management and that the managers of various departments should always ensure
that the employees are well aware of what is expected of them. The Balme Library controls a
large number of employees and it is sad that they have a very poor performance management
process. From pages 56-57 in the textbook, Aguinis, H. (2013) the Balme library has not
conducted a proper employee job analysis and hence all the other aspects of performance
management are also poorly done.
Performance planning calls for both an evaluation of results and behavior. The results
require that an employee should be aware of the expected outcome they should achieve at the
end of a certain period. This should bring out the specific components and objects an employee
is supposed to be responsible for and what things they should be accountable to. When an
employee is aware of what is expected of them, the management can also easily have a measure
of what outcomes have been achieved as it is easy to measure and quantify them. The employees
at the Balme library are rated on the same form with undifferentiated job categories despite
having different job responsibilities and duties. This, therefore, makes it hard for an employee
and even the employer to gauge what is the exact expectation of a certain employee.
