In what way did the new deal transform political culture?
Perhaps the biggest legacy of the New Deal was its ability to cause a shift in government
philosophy. As a result of the New Deal, the federal government not only had a role but a
responsibility in ensuring the health of the economy and the welfare of citizens. The New Deal
significantly redefined political and domestic policy in the US. Some of the most notable
political reforms from the New Deal include;
Increased government control over the economy and money supply This has however
resulted in a controversial debate on the extent to which government should interfere with
the economy. Some feel that the government should maintain a conservative role while
others, just like the New Deal, support a liberal government role in the US economy.
The New Deal saw the federal authority take responsibility for the welfare of the
American people. That is through various government programs such as a National
Pension System (social security), Agriculture price supports and, Protection for savings
among others.
From FDRs leadership and the New Deal, the Democratic party got a new unified voting
coalition. That was due to his (Roosevelt) support for the rise in trade union
organizations, African Americans, immigrants and poor voters. Those mentioned above
felt that the government should protect and directly support each American citizen even
those of minority groups.
