False Memories
Elizabeth Loftus experienced a false memory after she was fed with false information
that led to her mother’s death. Later in life, she realized that memories are in most cases
inaccurate especially when the human brain is open to suggestions. She developed a theory that
pursued to explain how human brain maquillage memories to fill in gaps of information that has
been forgotten or completely unknown. Loftus theory collaborated with the topic of repressed
memories that are pushed away from regular awareness only to resurface later as a regular
thought. However, Loftus claimed that repressed memories do not result from actual activities,
but on the contrary, it could be yielded by imaginations, dream interpretation, hypnosis and
exposure to false information.
To support her theory Loftus has conducted a number of researches and experiments that
have significantly demonstrated how easily human being memory can be manipulated. In her
explanation on how memories can mislead, she quoted a man by the name Steve Titus who was
wrongly accused of an offense he did not commit. She says that Steve was later vindicated after
involving a media personality who managed to investigate the real culprit. Loftus says that in the
United States, 300 people have been wrongly accused and 75% of those people were wrongly
accused because of testimonies that had been given out of fault memories. Loftus point at one of
the biggest error many people have been making by presuming that memory work like a
recording device that can be used to play now and then to deliver required information.
However, Loftus has refuted that idea claiming that human memories are constructive and at the
same time reconstructive likening it to Wikipedia page where anyone can alter information.
