Mass Society Theory
Meaning
Mass society theory states that, with industrialization and social changes, people are
becoming isolated and alienated. Mass society refers to any modern era’s society that has a mass
culture and large social institutions. West & Turner (2018) define a mass society in which
bureaucracy and prosperity have affected traditional social ties. Describing society as "mass"
evolved in the nineteenth century, referring to the industrial revolution that weakened aristocratic
and traditional values. Hence, West & Turner (2018) argue that mass society ideology can be
viewed as dominated by a few interconnected elites who control the life conditions of many people
by manipulation and persuasion. This shows that mass society's theorists advocate for various
