Cultural Competence Self-Assessment
After taking the self-assessments for cultural competence and sensitivity, I understood
what my client expects to appreciate my services. In the first assessment, the most frequent
response was A (20As and 13Bs) (Goode, n.d.). Based on the responses, the identified strengths
include demonstrating cultural competency during communication and distribution of resources
and learning materials. That is, I always consider what individual clients require before focusing
on the entire group. For example, it is good to start by recognizing every culture in the group
before developing generalized communication strategies. In the second assessment, my score
was above average in the awareness, knowledge, and skills sections (Cultural competence self-
assessment checklist, n.d.). As a result, I can work with multiple cultures without prejudice or
stereotype. However, I need to improve on the following weaknesses. First, I should improve on
identifying and addressing my cultural biases by obtaining feedback from my clients. Secondly, I
should improve my values and attitudes to become more culturally sensitive.
Social work is about social change and cohesion. Hence, it involves helping individuals,
families, and community members meet basic needs as well as promoting the well-being of
society. As a social worker, I can use the insights gained from the above self-assessment to
improve my relationship with community members. For example, I can demonstrate more
respect to my clients by learning how to address my cultural biases. Besides, as a social worker,
it is possible to identify people’s needs through effective communication. My social work goal is
to become a leader. Therefore, the insights gained about cultural sensitivity will help me become
a leader who values the interest of individual followers. In conclusion, every professional should
strive for cultural competence to facilitate effective service delivery and a conducive work
environment.
