Use proper APA format, citations, and referencing. $5 postThe nature of ethical concerns in qualitative research is typically more subtle than those found in quantitative research. Protecting privacy, minimizing harm, and respecting the shared experience of others are ethical challenges that qualitative researchers face. Violating a participant’s privacy by failure to use pseudonyms or redact sensitive information, sharing raw data with those not immediately connected to the study, and publishing easily identifiable information about individual participants are all ways that privacy can be violated by the qualitative researcher. In some cases, the effects of privacy violations may be minimal, depending on the nature of the research. Other cases, however, are quite sensitive and revealing the identity of participants could place them in danger. Methods to prevent privacy violations include the use of pseudonyms, restricting circulation of the study, limiting identifying quotes and data, and making participants aware of how results will be published (Orb, Eisenhauer, & Wynaden, 2001). Researchers must place the privacy of their study participants above the importance of their research in order to minimize harm to them. Not only do researchers have an ethical obligation to not place participants in physical harm, but they must also be responsible for any distress caused by discussing topics that trigger painful experiences. Discussing unpleasant memories has the potential to be cathartic and empowering for some, but researchers should be prepared for adverse responses. In such cases, researchers have an ethical obligation to refer participants to counseling when necessary, allow them to regain control by talking, terminate the interview if necessary, follow-up with the participant if appropriate, and seek ongoing consent to continue the interview (Orb, Eisenhauer, & Wynaden, 2001). In addition to protecting privacy and minimizing harm, researchers must also respect the shared experience of others. The purpose of qualitative research is to describe a phenomenon from the perspectives of those experiencing it. That should include listening to the voices of the disadvantaged and vulnerable populations, such as children, prisoners, the elderly, and the mentally ill (Orb, Eisenhauer, & Wynaden, 2001). Respect for people also means recognizing the rights of participants, including their right to be informed about the study and decide if they want to participate, as well as making them aware of their right to withdraw from participation without penalty (Orb, Eisenhauer, & Wynaden, 2001). Respect can take other forms, such as advising participants of the experimental nature of the study, or simply translating consent forms and other study materials into the local language. Using your textbook as a reference, you’ll be creating a lesson plan for a single day in a preschool classroom. Every lesson must incorporate an art project, music, or movement activity. It doesn’t have to be the main focus of the lesson, but it should follow the criteria outlined in the text. Remember, a coloring page where each student will end with a similar final product doesn’t count as art. Double-check your text for the definitions of art, music, and movement if you feel unsure. You must include your accommodations for the child with a hearing impairment and the child with a visual impairment. Reference the end of each chapter for specific ideas. Each lesson should account for students’ level of development. The independent activity shouldn’t require a sustained focus greater than 20 minutes.
