Synthesis Essay: Sustainability

Christopher Uhl understood that “sustainability is a social change movement” for

when he shifted his attention from the Amazonian issues and focused on Penn state, he

realized that his university had major sustainability issues (Uhl, 2004, p.22). Thus, he created

a group where he convened with nine students who were interested in the project, to hatch a

plan for measuring sustainability. He says that he was open to the students and admitted to

them that despite his skills in determining oxygen concentration and soil acidity, he had no

method of measuring sustainability (Edwards, 2005). There was not sustainability meter on

sale by any manufacturer. At that point, they embarked on a journey to develop indicators

that would make a difference in the field of suitability. Education is an important tool for

sustainability. By raising awareness through education, more students contributed to the

project and helped change the minds Penn state administrators and eventually it made a

difference to their campus sustainability initiative (Edwards, 2005).

The concept of sustainability being a social change requires the raising of awareness

among people for them to join in the effort that will make a difference. Edwards believes that

the core of the 3E’s of sustainability is education. Through education, students will be able to

understand the dynamics of sustainability and understand how to overcome obstacles that are

a global dilemma. Edwards stated that solid establishment of sustainability within the value

structures of the society can be achieved through education, while at the same time initiating

an evolution of the value structures towards “viable long-term approach to systemic global

problems” (Edwards, 2005).

David Orr believes that if parents truly loved their children, they would endeavor to

make the world habitable by contributing to sustainability. As David Orr stated, a society that

cherishes its children cannot subject them to immeasurable damage by raising them with

food, air, water heavily laced with chemicals (Orr, 2010). Combining parent’s effort in trying
