Labor unions have been instrumental in the 21
st
century in advocating for the interests and
rights of workers. The urge by many big corporations to focus more on profit-making and growth
endeavors may result in a violation of employee rights hence the important of labor unions (Bratton
and Gold, 2012). Based on the number of employees they represent, the unions become powerful
tools through which workers can make their interests known to employers and consequently acted
upon more effectively compared to individual bargaining (Bratton and Gold, 2012).
What is the principal role of a union in today’s business environment?
The primary function of unions in the modern business environment is to present the
interests of workers to their employees. This means that unions are mandated to ensure that the
welfare of employees is upheld in organizations where they work (Naff et al., 2013). Some of the
most important functions carried out by these unions include advocating for a safe working
environment, representing workers during collective bargaining process as well as safeguarding
their rights e.g. When an employee is unfairly relieved off their duties. It is, therefore, the
responsibility of unions to ensure that laws protecting the rights and welfare of workers are
implemented accordingly (de la Morreaux, 2016).
What is the purpose and effect of “Right-to-Work” laws in states that have enforced them?
The right to work laws aims to provide an employee freedom of working without
necessarily joining a labor union. In as much as labor unions may represent the welfare of
employees in general, some individual may feel that the collective bargaining approach used by
the unions do not really fulfill their needs (Shannon, 2014). Furthermore, labor unions in many
cases may exercise their powers to enter into negotiations with employees on their own accord
