“Sometimes it’s better to choose your own family" is perhaps one of the most famous
quotes from the film Shoplifter (2018). The film is full of sardonic humor and bracingly
exempted from judgment. The film is the story of four young children who are abandoned by
their mother in an apartment in Tokyo. The film is critical scrutiny of consanguineous
relationships. By featuring a clutch of pitiable vagabonds and delinquents living under the
same roof and, with compassion and empathy, the film shows that the definition of a family is
how you delineate it. The plot of the film is tenanted by characters who rechristen
themselves, fashioning their own peculiar rules and validations for the way that they want to
live their lives (Ehrlich, 199). These characters recognize that consanguineous ties routinely
disappoint and frustrate. Nevertheless, the makeshift family in Shoplifters is not deprived of
its share of embitterment and individual trials; like most families, it’s a flawed assembly of
mortal flaws. The film features the themes are isolation and social invincibility as well
professional success that results from numbing of souls.
The focal idea of the film Shoplifter is relatable to many people. There are notions
such as “blood is thicker than water” and “you cannot choose your family”. However,
according to the film, this is not always the case. According to the film, it turns out that one
can choose their family and that blood is not always necessarily 'thicker than water. The film
gives the impression that those who create their own families end up experiencing a feeling
that is extensively deep-rooted than that of the standard family bonds. The film also clearly

shows that family relatives are not to be leaned on in the logic that even blood bonds
disappoint every so often in the contemporary world.
Questions and Answers
Q1.
Lighting in film production is typically used to portray mood and atmosphere. The
dark lighting is used to invoke feelings of mystery to the film viewers. The film is full of
misery and dark concepts, and this mingles out perfectly with the dark lighting in most parts
of the film. For example, the ideas of isolation and social invincibility throughout the entire
film would perfectly blend with the dark lighting. The bright lighting on the wild beach
shows the cheerful atmosphere and mood in the specific scenes where it is employed.
Q2.
No. This is because the title ‘Shoplifters’ perfectly suits the film and the main idea
being conveyed by the director of the film. The film is about a family with no biological that
only relies on shoplifting in order to cope with the abject poverty they sail in. By this token,
the title ‘Shoplifters’ is a better title than the proposed ‘Speak it Out Loud’ title.
Q3.
The bond between Yuri and Nobuyo is strong. The relationship between Yuri and
Nobuyo is perhaps the most notable relationship in the entire film. The solitude and
mistreatment which Yuri has been exposed to is something with which Nobuyo appears to
comprehend (Zhang, 10). This is made explicit when Nobuyo burns up the dress of Yuri after
getting her consent and then hugging her passionately.
Q4.
This shows the authentic relationship dynamics between Yuri and Nobuyo. Yuri is
open to Nobuyo. This helps the film viewers to understand the nature of the relationship
