SELF-CHECK QUESTIONS 2
1. Why communication is important for emergency management
Communication ensures that issues of transportation and logistics are addressed on
time. For example, communications ensure that residents are informed which mode of
transport and where to access it if there is a disaster (Lindell et al., 2007). It also ensures that
all the necessary resources are set aside so that when the disaster strikes, it does not cause a
lot of losses. For example, through effective communication, enough fuel, food, medicines,
and other crucial items are stored in a secure place between disasters such as hurricanes
strikes. Communication helps in planning, implementing, controlling, and activities before or
even during a disaster. With such effective logistics planning, it becomes easy to conduct
evacuation and recovery processes before and after an emergency (Lindell et al., 2007).
Communication is thus a crucial factor in any emergency management. It helps reduce the
possible effects of a disaster by planning early and creating a perfect response plan.
2. Why can we not make a rational decision, and what efforts do we need to make
to address decision-making challenges?
Before or even during a disaster, rationality cannot be achieved. It is because there are
always complex and uncertain conditions when a disaster strikes. There is always limited
information since sharing information during a disaster (Lindell et al., 2007). To address
challenges in decision-making, it is crucial to increase levels of situational awareness. Doing
so ensures that there is enough information about the surrounding hence making it easy to
make decisions. Also, relying on gut instincts, modern technology, and other support systems
can help make the right decisions. Being keen on the decision-making process can ensure that
potential weaknesses and mistakes are corrected. It is always crucial to be adaptive and
creative (Lindell et al., 2007). It is through such capabilities that the decision-making process
is always effective.
