Discussion: Effects of mental illnesses in the society
Mental illnesses cause great economic effect as of a magnitude $ 1oo million a year in the
USA only, at average. The political effect includes the requirement by the government that it
should be covered in health insurance packages already implemented in 29 states. The affordable
care act 2010 also required that behavioral therapy be covered alongside physical therapies
(Editors, 2012, February 23).Shootouts and killings have occurred in the past due to mental
illnesses. The legal systems have been accepting mental illnesses as causes for violence in grave
serious criminal activities. Currently, there is a reduction of beds in hospitals to hold reasonable
cases of physically ill patients, and mentally ill patients occupy the second tier of while
considering who is to be bedridden. As a result, mentally ill hardly find beds in hospitals, unless
they are extremely dangerous to themselves (Lockey, 2013, February 9). It is becoming
extremely difficult to contain prisoners with mental illnesses. Prison wardens are finding it
difficult to control this population who can harm themselves in the prison cells and can harm
others if set free. Maximum protection is not a solution in such cases, neither is minimum
security, and it has trouble prison wardens on the best course of action (PBS, 2005).
Letter to the authorities (Massachusetts)
38.6% of the Massachusetts was diagnosed with depression. 10% of the depression cases
were fatal and therapies were recommended. Of the depressed population, 49.5% receive
treatment, while 50.5% did not receive any treatment (PBS, 2005). Massachusetts legal has a
propagation strategy of standards of judicial practices, civil commitment and authorization of
medical treatment for mental illnesses (Commonwealth of Massachusetts district court‘s
department of trial court, December, 2011).
