Running head: MADELEINE LEININGER’S CULTURE CARE: DIVERSITY AND UNIVERSALITY THEORY
Introduction
There exists several theories that attempt to create a view of the whole nursing phenomenon. They
address the nature, mission and goals of nursing care in a general fashion. Such theories are created
through the observations and insights of the theorist behind them. The development of grand
theories is aimed at differentiating the nursing discipline from the medical model. These
approaches aim at stimulating the expansion of nursing knowledge as well as providing a general
structure for the organization of the nursing knowledge. The unstructured nature grand theories
allow for a broad range of knowledge available to practitioners and scholars within a nursing
specific frame of reference. Grand theories serve as a guide for practice as an alternative to
practicing solely by tradition. They create a foundation for education by suggesting a focus and a
structure for curricula development. Moreover, they assist in the professionalization of nursing by
providing a basis for practice. Grand theories play a huge role in distinguishing nursing from other
from other helping professions and serve as a basis for legitimization to its science. On the other
hand, middle range theories are less abstract than grand theories. Merton (1968) describes as lying
between “the minor but necessary working hypothesis that evolves in abundance during day to day
research and the all-inclusive systematic efforts to develop a unified theory”. Middle range theories
are narrower in scope as compared to grand theories since they are concerned with less general but
more specific phenomena. They are comprised of fewer concepts and propositions and as such are
representative of a limited or partial view of the nursing reality. Middle range theories are more
appropriate for empirical testing as compared to grand theories. This paper discusses one of the
grand theories, the theory of culture care diversity and universality.
