Select one of the United Nations' (U.N.) Millennial Development Goals
(MDGs). Visit the website and report on the UN's progress in achieving
this goal? How will meeting this goal positively impact the health of the
world? What suggestions would you make to help the UN achieve this
goal?
According to the United Nations site (2016), they have chosen “17 Goals
to transform our world.” Those seventeen goals include the following;

“No poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education,
gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy,
decent work and economic growth, among others (Goals, 2016).” These
goals are the new UN goals introduced in 2016, for our discussion
according to our reading the Millennial Goals discussed are “Eradicate
Extreme poverty and hunger, universal primary education, gender
equality and empower women, reduce child mortality, etc (GCU, 2016).”
The topic this author has chosen to focus on in this discussion question is
poverty as it seems to be a topic that is still present despite being a goal
from the previous Millennium goal.
According to the United Nations goal report, there were tremendous
improvements in the reduction of poverty. This could be why the
previous goals called it “extreme poverty” (Millennium, 2015) and the
current goals simply state a goal of “no poverty” (Sustainable, 2016). In
the report written about the Millennium Goals, they found that in year
1990 there was 47% extreme poverty (Millennium, 2015). By the end of
the Millennium development goals in 2015, they found it had improved
and was only 14% of extreme poverty in the world (Millennium, 2015).
This is an incredible improvement, but even with these statistics, the
report did admit that there are still approximately “800 million people ..
extreme poverty” (Millennium, 2015, p 8).
All of the topics written by the UN are complicated issues that have to be resolved as a
group. The fact that the goals set for the Millennium showed such improvement, proved
that by educating those around them how change is possible. The United Nations
developed grants for countries wishing to improve upon their situations for impoverished
areas. Grants are a great idea, and I love the fact that the United Nations included global
companies like Ikea and assisted sort of popup new jobs with training (UN, 2015). I have
my own personal issues with the United Nations and being blind to many things, I think
that more people need to get involved outside of them in setting goals and improving life
in our world. It’s such a huge world, I almost feel like we need to work on ourselves in
our own country. How many homeless children are there in the US? According to the
AIR every year with in the United States there are approximately 2.5 million children that
are homeless, this statistic is shocking (National, 2016).
