KINGDOM: ANIMALIA PHYLUM: CHORDATA CLASS: CHONDRICHTHYES ORDER: ORECTOLOBIFORMES FAMILY: RHINCODONTIDAE GENUS: RHINCODON SPECIES: R. typus Introduction The whale shark is a giant of the oceans; the dimensions of it’s body gives the title the largest fish in the world and therefore the biggest shark. It is the only member of the Genus Rhincodon. It belongs to the order Orectolobiformes and the family Rhincodon. The shark shares the name of the cetaceans because of it’s massive size. o o o The whale shark can measure up to 20 meters and can weigh up to 12,500 kg. ( The largest individual had a length of 12.65m (41.5 ft.) and weigh for about 12.5 tons (47,000 lbs.) It’s fusiform body is wide in the middle area and narrows in the tail and head that is wide and flat, it has 2 small eyes on the front. It’s mouth , located towards the end of the snout , can open for about 1.5 m. and inside there are 300-350 rows of teeth and 10 pairs of useful pads to filter food. o o o It has pair of nostrils at the tip of the snout , lack of cirumnarial grooves but it has rudimentary beards. It has a pair of gill slits on each side of the head and spiracles behind the eyes . Like many pelagic shark, it has a pair of dorsal fins (one larger than the other) and one pair of pectoral as well as caudal fins. The skin of the whale shark has a bluegray coloration on the back and white in the belly. the upper area has a light spots that form unique patterns in the sharks.  ? ...
