Introduction
Public relations are a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial
relationship between the organization and their public. In simple terms the definition basically
focuses on basic concept of relations. The process is preferred for management functions which
can bring ideas of control from top to bottom which is called one way communication.
Relationship helps in bringing together the organization and individuals with their key stake
holders. This course gives people a good understanding of the fundamentals of public relations,
and its role in the dynamic modern world society.
Principles for public relations and practice
External relations- this is the relation which involves communication with people from
outside the organization. They include suppliers, dealers, customers and the surrounding
community leaders. This also includes arrangement of promotional activities, conference
meetings, trade mark displays and also keeping the organization running under the rules and
regulations of the government. It can also include organizing and scheduling volunteer group
workers. (Cordner 148)
Internal relations- this involves the relations between the employees within the
organization. It may include managers, junior staffs, union members and any other interested
groups.

Media relations- this is done by mass media where by communication with a large group
of people outside the organization is done. Officer of an organization is asked some questions
from the media team then responds to the queries. The press officer also coaches the officer on
how to contact the press interview and serves as the spokes person. (Cornelissen)
Employees relations- these are the relationship built between the managers and the
employees in an organization, this is more applicable in big complex organization where line of
communication between the managers and lower staff is a problem.
Industrial relations- provides advice to management on how to improve productivity and
beneficial relations with other companies and businesses which are within the same industry and
relate in one way or the other in supplies, distribution competition and in labour unions.
Community relations- this is the same as external relations, these are activities which
create relationship between the organization and surrounding neighbours. It may also include
other neighbouring companies or group of people. (Zadek)
Customer relations- this is one very important relation for a successful and competitive
organization. It involves developing a better trust and good will between the organization and the
customers or consuming public.( Richard)
Finance relations- this involves good understanding through good communication with
stock exchange market, banks and insurance agencies shareholders and stockbrokers.
Government relations- this involves government agencies such as legislature and
regulatory agencies which stand on behalf of the organization.
Counseling the advice given to the organization especially on how to mobilize the
public as well as customers. It also helps in reducing criticism and hostility from the press and
pressure society groups.
