Exposing the Cyberbullying Situation as it stands from a Recent Past to Present Date
52% of youths have reported at least a cyber bully directly targeting them, a quantitative
research reported back in 2014. At teenage and adolescence, 11% of individuals reported that
embarrassing photographs have been posted publicly without their consent. This is a problem
because more than 50% of the young people who reported being cyber bullied lacked the
confidence to make the instances known to their parents, and so continue receiving subsequent
threats and mistreatments through several media platforms. 95% of the teenagers who
experienced cyber bullying confessed that there are other teenagers out there who experienced
the behavior but chose to ignore it. The issue is increasing with increased digitization, since
statistics show that 80% of teenagers currently use smart phones, and it is projected to increase.
Flaming, impersonation, cyber stalking, trolling, and outing are some of the most common forms
of cyber bullying at current (NoBullying.com). This paper explores cyber bullying, with specific
interest in teenagers and individuals in adolescent stages of life comprehensively.
It is essential to look at the case through a critical analysis of the statistics. On top of what is
provided, it is noted that out of the 69% of teenagers with smart phones and/or tablets, 80% of
them are active on social networks. It was also noted that teenagers have lost their face to face
communication skills and they can hardly confront even a parent because of their texting

behavior. On average, teenagers with communication gadgets were found to send an average of
60 texts on a daily basis, more than what adults do on average. Due to the fact that this children
cannot confront their parents, the situation has pushed them into public places avoidance due to
fear, the statistics proving that 3 million children per month miss school due to cyber bullies
threats. Worse still, 20% of the cyber bullied teenagers think about suicide (Cyberbullying
Hotline).
“My family is kind of a big target. I have a transgender sister and so a lot of hate goes
towards us. But I also get a lot of love. So, we pay most attention to that. Sometimes we get
really annoyed with the hate, everyone doeswe have to admit it but we just ignore it." This
was Jacky Evancho’s, a 16-years-old, response to cyber bullying after she accepted to perform
on Donald Trump’s inauguration (Jaworski). Under the age of adulthood, an individual can tell
how much they are hated, alongside their family members and societies because it is put out
openly in the social media nowadays. It is even more serious than that considering Brandy Vela
case.
Brandy Vela committed suicide in the presence of her family members after too heavy a
load was placed on her by cyber bullies. She was pushed to a point that cause too much
psychological pressure that she felt that death was a better option. Worse still, there were follow
up threats even after she was dead. A friend designed her a tribute Facebook page, where the
cyber bullies continued with posts that she was a coward, and she could have done in earlier
(commit suicide). There are millions other cases out there, reported and unreported as shown in
the opening of this text, and teenagers are in the danger of receiving even more cyber bullying
cases, given the high rate at which teenagers are accessing the internet in the current world
(HADLEY).
