A urinalysis is a test of human being urine. A urinalysis is used to detect and manage a
variety of disorders, such as diabetes, kidney disease, and urinary tract infections. Urinalysis
entails checking the urine appearance, content of urine, and level of concentration. Generally,
urinalysis is the chemical, microscopic, and physical examination of urine (Strasinger et al,
2014). It involves a number of tests to detect and measures different compounds that pass
through the urine. Urinary tract infections for example make urine look very cloudy instead of
clear. Rise in the level of protein in urine can be an indication of kidney disease. In most of the
cases, unusual urinalysis results require more testing to detect the source of the problem.
The physical characteristics of urine involve observations and measurements of the pH,
odour, turbidity, color, volume, and specific gravity. To pathology, visual observation of urine
sample can provide important clues. In term of colour, the colour of normal urine is usually light
yellow to amber. The yellow color of urine is because of the presence of a yellow pigment called
urochrome (Schinstock et al, 2013). The change of urine colour is caused various vegetables
such as rhubarb, beets, and carrots. The odor of urine is aromatic, characteristics of freshly
voided urine. Due to bacteria activity, the urine becomes more ammonia-like upon standing.
In term of turbidity, normal urine is clear but becomes cloudy upon standing. The cloudy
urine portrays the presence of mucus, urates, bacteria, leukocytes, phosphates, and epithelial
cells. The urine pH range from 4.5 to 8 and average pH is 6.0, slightly acidic. Vegetarian diets
and bacterial infection increase alkalinity, whereas, high protein diets increase acidity (Schroeder
et al, 2015). Specific gravity of urine entails the measure of the density of urine or the relative
proportions of dissolved solids in ration to the volume of the sample or specimen. Microscopic
