How can ADHD Students get Support in an Educational Setting?
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurologic condition that affects a
person from childhood to adulthood. According to Faraone et al. (2021), ADHD is caused by
environmental and genetic factors whereby ecological factors affect a child during the early
stages of life, like during the postnatal and fetal periods, while genetically, it can be caused by a
traumatic brain injury or simple genetic abnormality. Primarily, this condition affects children of
school-going age, as evidenced by millions of children diagnosed with this condition across the
U.S. More than three million children aged between twelve and seventeen years and more than
two million children aged between six and eleven years were diagnosed with the condition in
2016 (Center for Disease Control, 2020). This study presents possible mechanisms ADHD
students can get support in an educational setting.
Teachers can utilize various interventions like collaborative life skills programs and best
class/banking time programs. According to Mikami et al. (2021), a collaborative life skills
program is concerned with improving elementary skills for school-going children while reducing

competency ratings concerning typical practice conditions. Also, Banking Time and BEST
programs focus on improving student-teacher relationships in the classroom by addressing
adjustment difficulties (Mikami et al., 2021). Collectively, these measures bear a promise of
helping ADHD students achieve their full potential. According to the theory of social
referencing, teachers in elementary schools have the ability to shape the dynamics of peer groups
to "invisible hands". In other words, it is possible to evaluate a child according to how the
teacher treats that child. For instance, if a teacher develops positive relationships with the student
