THE ROLE OF VALUES IN RESEARCH 2
The Role of Values in Research
Position #3: Research will inevitably be influenced by values. Therefore, we must be aware
of how these values will influence our research
Axiology is the branch of philosophy that is concerned with the nature of value and what
kinds of things have value. Axiology lays the basis for the study of ethics and aesthetics.
Communication theorists have always had a hard time dealing with the axiological issues that
arise out of research. The biggest problem that communication scholars have to deal with is the
inclusion or exclusion of values in research. There are those communication theorists that argue
that the inclusion of values in research leads to skewed findings, whereas others believe that it is
impossible to exclude values from research. Interpretivists are those proponents of the school of
thought that it is impossible to separate science and values (Littlejohn & Foss, 2009).
The values of the researcher will always influence the research. The scientific results of
the research are therefore mainly dependent on the values of the researcher. Understanding the
values of the researcher then becomes necessary and can be used to achieve the best possible
results from the research. Considering that some of the values are so deep that the researcher
may be unable to identify them, it is important for an evaluation of the researcher to be done first
(Littlejohn & Foss, 2009). With an understanding of the researcher and his values, the
understanding of how the results will be influenced by the values becomes possible. After
identifying the potential impact, the right group of researchers may be tasked with an area of
their interest and therefore leading to better-informed scientific results.
