Great piece. I agree that the arguments linking popular culture to obesity are exaggerated. Most
people tend to concentrate on how watching too much television causes inactivity and unhealthy
eating without examining the factors that force children to spend most of their time indoors
watching television. I also feel that the contribution of the fashion industry to eating disorders is
often exaggerated. Based on the studies cited by Sternheimer, eating disorders are complex
health issues that are associated with low self-esteem and the desire to have a perfect body. Thus,
most people hide in fashion, while in reality, they already desired to change their body size even
before joining the fashion industry.
