SWOT analysis refers to the process of identifying and analyzing a company’s internal
strengths and weaknesses, and its external opportunities and threats. A SWOT analysis is a key
component of an organization’s strategic planning process since it provides an extensive view of
an organization’s current and future-looking condition. A company’s internal strengths and
weaknesses segments provide a view of its current position. On the other hand, the company’s
opportunities and strengths segments provide a company’s future challenges and possibilities
(Bock, Frank, Bergmann, Strecker, 2016).
Five Forces Analysis, commonly known as Porter’s five forces is a framework that
attempts to evaluate the level of competition within a business segment and industry, and its
strategy development. It forges upon industrial organization to come up with five forces that assess
the competitive level and thus attractiveness of an industry. Strategic planning basically entails the
process of organizational management action that is used to generate priorities, focus resources
and energy to ensure that employees work towards common goals. Based on this definition, it’s
clear that SWOT analysis and Five Forces analysis enhance the strategic planning process
(Comino, Ferretti, 2016).
SWOT and Five Forces analysis enhance strategic planning because they create a
framework for focusing on strategic planning. These tools are used to guide and direct strategic
planning process by coercing managers and other stakeholders to regard particular aspects of their
organization and their competitive environment. In addition, SWOT analysis and Five Forces
analysis focus of industry analysis. For instance, in SWOT analysis, a company’s internal strengths
and weaknesses are evaluated with respect to the entire industry, while opportunities and strengths
originate within the industry. In this case therefore, these tools enable managers and other decision-
makers to focus on the most relevant landscape when considering strategic planning programs. In
