Physical stage of development
To begin with, adolescence is the development of period that begins at puberty and end at the
later adulthood. This is a typical age that range from 13 to 18 years. It should be noted that
puberty involves physiological changes in the person’s weight, height, body composition,
respiratory and circulatory systems, sex characteristics and height, Rice (2016).
During the puberty period, the adolescent develop secondary sexual characteristics such as
development of hips and breasts in females as their hormonal balance. It should be noted that the
adolescent growth is considered as rapid increase in the individual’s weight and height during
puberty, which results from simultaneous release of thyroid hormones, growth hormones and
androgens. Since the rate of physical development differ hugely among the teenagers and hence
it can be the source of embarrassment and pride, Rice (2016). Menarche is defined as onset of
menstruation in females; menstrual period.
Psychosocial stage of development
This stage is the best explored and described by Erik Erikson. Erikson was a theorist who
modified the Freuds controversial psychosexual theory. He modified the theory into the eight-

stage of psychosocial development theory. In each stage of the Erikson’s eight development
stages, the theorist suggested that two conflicting ideas need to be resolved in order for an
individual to become a good member of society. The eight stags of psychosocial development
include autonomy, trust vs. mistrust, doubt/shame, industry vs. inferiority, initiative vs. guilt, role
confusion vs. identity, isolation vs. intimacy, integrity vs. despair, generativity vs. stagnation.
Automony is described as a self-government, which is the function independently or freedom to
act. On the other hand, psychosocial is having social aspects and psychological. According to
Erikson, we are motivated by the desire to achieving success in certain areas of lives. Erikson
theorized that we generally experience eight main stages of psychosocial development in our
lifetimes, Rice (2016).
Cognitive stage of development
According to Jean Piaget, people progress through four series of cognitive development. These
stages are marked by shifts in how children understand the world. Piaget believed children were
“little scientists” who actively try to explore and understand the world around them. In his
observation, Piaget established a theory of cognitive development that encompasses four stages:
