NERVOUS SYSTEMS 2
1. What is the most significant difference between the roles of the peripheral and central
nervous systems in shaping behavior? Why?
The human nervous system is comprised of two parts, the central nervous system,
and the peripheral nervous system. The CNS starts from the brain and runs the entire
spinal cord length. The PNS, on the other hand, comprises of the nerve connections
running the whole body apart from the CNS. It primarily connects vital body organs to
the CNS. The neuroanatomical structure of the body is responsible for influencing human
aspects such as behavior, expressions, and feelings. The nervous and sensory systems of
the human body have a significant bearing on the subject’s behavior (Mann, 2011). These
two are the drivers of human behavior, which is in turn directed by socio-cultural
elements in one’s surroundings (Anderson & Carter, 2013). Neurons in the nervous
systems are responsible for relaying stimuli from the external and internal body
environments. In addition to transmitting information, they also store it, facilitating the
onset of human behavior. The nervous systems play a fundamental role in the formation
and modification of behavior. The CNS and PNS have unique roles in regards to shaping
behavior.
The peripheral nervous system is more in touch with the external environment and
receives stimuli firsthand. That way, it is responsible for the temporal human behavior,
such as responding the feed-and-breed, or fight-or-flight mechanisms (Mathers, 2015).
The PNS is distributed further into the autonomic, and somatic nervous systems. The
former takes charge of unconscious human behavior, such as digestion and respiration.
The somatic nervous system, on the other hand, is responsible for voluntary human
behavior, as well as reflex arcs. The central nervous system plays a subtle but overly
