DATA PRIVACY 2
How tech companies control billions of minds daily
Are you willing to give up your data to tech companies for access to apps?
No, I am not willing to give up some of my data to tech firms for access to apps. Tech
companies tend to collect personal data and use it in ways that users cannot track or would not
allow their data to be used. Companies such as Twitter, Facebook, Google, and Instagram are
collecting personal data about people's habits, personalities, and identities and sometimes use it
for nefarious purposes. According to Forbes (2019), big tech companies are using free and
addictive apps to collect personal data that is later sold without the consent of users. These
companies can track and monitor my activities online such as the websites I click, the people I
communicate with, and who I swipe right on. Based on the information I have learned from the
TED talk by Harris (2017), Forbes (2019), and NPR (2019) I am not willing to give up my data
to big tech companies for free apps. The companies have a way of surveying my private data
even when am asleep and either sell it or use it to their advantage without my knowledge or
consent (Valentino-DeVries et al., 2018). The fact the data collected is sold to the highest bidder
and the bidder can use it in whatever activity they please are astonishing to me.
I am also not willing to give up my data to big tech companies for free apps since these
companies always seeking a way to capture my attention and enslave me to their platforms. I Am
worried the companies might use the information I give up to them to shape my feeling and
thoughts without my knowledge. According to Harris (2017), big tech companies can influence
the feelings and thoughts of more than a billion people. The companies collect and use data to
influence how a billion people think on a particular day. For instance, data collected by the
companies can be used to send notifications that will schedule my thought even when I don’t
intend to do a particular activity at that particular time of day. Giving up my data to big tech
