Psychologist led by Dr. Jean Twenge argue that egocentric in students have increased
over time and research carried using a standard research tool called the Narcissistic Person
Inventory(NPI) between 1979 and 2006 has confirmed this increase in the level of college
narcissism. The research that Jean and her colleagues carried out in over 16,000 American
college students also revealed that there has also been an increase in individualism among the
youths and that narcissism is creating a negative impact on the lives of the young (Twenge et
al., 2008). In the area of vanity, for example, the study revealed that there had been an
increase in the number of plastic surgery rates done in the US since the late 1990s.Other
procedures have also gone through the roof like liposuction and breast augmentation
(Malcolm, 2014). There is a greater motivation to be unique for the young people to stand out
rather than fit in. It is also evident in the names children are called nowadays which they
draw from social security. According to Dr.Twenge people who score higher in narcissism
are more likely to get trouble in their relationships since they are mainly focused on
themselves rather than everyone else. Materialism has gone up, and research shows that74%
of first-year students in college in 2004 cited being well of financially as being a very
significant life goal compared to a mere 45% in 1967(Twenge et al., 2008).
As measured by NPI narcissism is linked to a range of emotional outcomes that are
positive which includes self-esteem, life’s satisfaction, positive effect and extraversion.
Narcissism has also been associated with some short-term benefits like enhanced
performance on public evaluation tasks and victories in competitive tasks. Narcissism
according to the research carried out by Twenge and her colleagues found out that narcissism
has many costs to oneself which includes compulsive shopping, alcohol abuse, gambling,
