To senior leadership
Introduction
I have reviewed the Diabetes metrics dashboard for Mercy Medical Center that was sent
to me by leadership for all four quarters of 2018 2019 that measured eye, foot, and HgbA1C
exams and race, age, and gender statistics for 2019 only. Diabetes is a chronic illness that is due
to the body's inability to make or use insulin, causing high blood sugar and if not adequately
managed, it can lead to an array of serious complications, including heart disease, stroke,
hypertension, blindness, amputations, and premature death. Per the CDC Behavioral Risk Factor
Surveillance Study and noted on Diabetes in Minnesota fact sheet, in 2017, 7.8% of Minnesota
adults (about 330,000) had been diagnosed with diabetes (type 1 or 2), approximately 18,000
new cases are diagnosed each year (2010). Selvin et al. (2017) indicated 1 in 10 people with
diabetes do not know that they have the disease. I will discuss my organizational and
interprofessional team performance evaluation against prescribed metrics set forth by
government laws and policies at the local, state, and federal levels. After analyzing what areas
are underperforming, ethical actions to address these will be discussed and how these areas could
be potentially improved.
Evaluation of Diabetes Dashboard Metrics
Two of the most extensive underperforming areas identified via the dashboard were the
significant decreases in quarters three and four of 2018 and 2019 in foot and HgbA1C exams.
These factors are considered essential tests in identifying diabetes-related complications early.
Per the dashboard, the total number of diabetes patients at Mercy Medical, assumingly according
to race and those left blank or declined to answer, or by age, totaled 563. In 2019, foot exams
