CIVIL WAR 2
Explain the significance of the role of African Americans in the Union war effort during
the Civil War
The participation of African-Americans in the civil war was barred by a federal law
signed in 1792. Lincoln, president at the time, feared that authorizing the recruitment of African-
Americans would cause the border states to secede. However, the decision to include black
troops in the American army was reached owing to the escalating number of contrabands,
increased personnel needs, and the declining numbers of volunteers from white ethnicity.
Congress passed an act in 1862, freeing slaves whose masters served in the confederate army
(Murrin et al. 2020). Although the recruitment was slow at first, many former slaves joined the
military after being encouraged by Fredrick Douglass to secure eventual citizenship.
The new regiments of black troops were led by white officers selected from existing
white forces. By 1863, the white and black union regiment engaged in their first battle at
Milliken's Bend on the Mississippi River and Port Hudson (Murrin et al. 2020). As a result, some
white officers were surprised by how the African-American soldiers fought to liberate their
people. Despite their participation in the union, black soldiers captured by the confederates faced
oppression as most of them were sold as slaves or even hanged. As such, the African Americans
faced more threats during the war than the whites. Although the black troops had proven

digging trenches.
Moreover, black regiments were seen as inferior to whites, leading to their poor treatment
in racially segregated hospitals. Consequently, African Americans were provided with inferior
equipment during the war, further endangering their lives more than the whites. Besides fighting
in the war, African-Americans participated in other roles where they served as nurses, cooks, and
blacksmiths. While the South refused to provide blacks with arms, they allowed them to build
