EFFECTIVENESS OF FACE MASKS IN REDUCING RISK OF COVID 2
Coronavirus is transmitted through infected respiratory droplets. There is a general
international consensus that face masks are effective in preventing the dispersion of these
droplets. Bundgaard et al. (2021) conducted an assessment to determine the effectiveness of
masks in the reduction of Covid-19 risk and found very little impact of mask-wearing on the
reduction of infection rates. Out of the 3030 assigned to wear masks, 42 (1.8%) participants
got infected. On the other hand, 2994 control participants, 53 (2.1%), got infected. Besides
having readily available patients to study, the study was limited by a lot of inconclusive results,
variable participant adherence, missing data, lack of blinding, and reliance on patient-reported
and home test results. The study should have assessed whether the use of masks can lower
transmissions.
The effectiveness of masks does vary by the particular type of mask that is in use. The
most recommended mask in preventing Coronavirus infections is the N95 mask. However,
cloth and surgical masks are also widely used for this purpose. A separate study by Chou et al.
(2020) to examine the effectiveness of three separate mask types (cloth masks, surgical, and
N95 masks) in the prevention of Covid-19 found stronger results suggesting higher
effectiveness of N95 masks in comparison to the other two. Chou et al. (2020) reviewed 39
studies, and among these, there were 18 randomized controlled trials and 21 observational
studies. The 39 studies included 33 867 participants assessing community mask use. This study
has a plethora of literature to pick from in terms of mask effectiveness which empowered the
research. However, they were still limited by the subject of SARS-CoV-2 studies.
So many countries have followed the norm by recommending the use of face masks in
public spaces to reduce the spread of Covid-19. This recommendation has been challenged by
several public opinions, and countries like the US have responded with mandates. Following
the limitations of the study by Chou et al. (2020), Fretheim et al. (2021) challenged the health
recommendation to use facemasks to reduce the spread of Covid-19, stating that there were
