I absolutely agree with you that the Beck Depression Inventory is an important tool for
drug and substance misuse screening. This tool, which is typically used to screen for depression,
can reveal a lot of information on a person's drug misuse status. This is because it has been
established that there is a link between substance addiction and depression. Depression is a
common cause of drug and substance misuse. This is due to the fact that most people turn to
drugs to keep themselves up when they are depressed. Similarly, long-term or short-term usage
of a medicine, particularly anti-depressants, can result in depression (the National Institute on
Drug Abuse, 2010). While it is true that Beck's depression inventory can be an important tool for
detecting drugs and substance misuse, it is not sufficient. Other critical information needed to
construct a thorough treatment plan is missing from this tool. This raises the question of how
important it is to screen for drugs and substance misuse using many evaluation instruments.
