Section 1: What I read about or the Subject Matter
Chapter six talks about how to study a setting while one is still working in that environment.
The process requires several methodologies in assessment, analyzing, and describing, which are
discussed in detail. The first step in the process is refining social interaction and reducing the
chances of resistance in the organization. Since that role is established, the next thing is to
determine what to study in-depth in the organization. To back up the study, one must collect
enough data. A wide variety of data is required over one piece of evidence. In the beginning, there
is no need to focus on specific areas of the observation because there is little acquaintance with
the people and the setting. However, as one becomes more familiar with the environment and the
people, one can develop their initial general observations to be more perceptive.
Data Collection
After understanding the people and their environment, a more refined data collecting
approach like interviewing can be used. Interviews give an in-depth understanding of issues and
things that cannot be observed, like attitudes, thoughts, and personal perceptions. The number of
people and the format of interview questions are dependent on the type of information needed. The
process of administering an interview starts with defining the area of interest. The area should be
defined to avoid broadness and ambiguity. It should not be too large to require a lifetime in
researching or a group of researchers to complete.
Secondly, one formulates the questions. A set of questions ensures all the topics are
covered in the interview. The questions should be a standard series to ensure all people are asked
similarly. Open-ended questions dig more information that closed questions should be more
