ASSESSMENT OF THE NEUROLOGICAL SYSTEM 2
Concussions are mainly induced through outwards injuries; gross anatomic lesions are
therefore absent as a result. These are also known as mild traumatic brain injury. Symptoms
include impairment of memory and attention, headaches and the change of the mental status of
the individual. Complex metabolic effects are brought forth by the mechanical change occurring
in the brain. The metabolic events brought about by the injury often lead to neurotoxicity,
energetic metabolism disturbances and the perturbation of homeostatic balance. The
pathophysiology of the concussive injuries gives an insight on the acute and chronic effects that
will arise from the condition. Often times, concussions result in confusion and amnesia to the
patients which result from the biochemically induced neurological injury. Understanding the
pathophysiology of the illness also gives an insight on the different treatments and lab tests that
the doctors need to do in order to allow for better detection of the condition in the patient.
Diffusion tensor imaging, functional magnetic resonance imaging, as well as magnetic resonance
spectroscopy are among the different tools that have been used by doctors in the treatment of
concussive brain injuries although the tools mentioned are part of the translational research being
carried out.
Different tools have been used when performing neurological assessment tests and every tool is
used to perform a specific function. The reflex hammer is used when the practitioner intends to
illicit tendons in the different parts of the body and it also comes with a pin and other accessories
that determine the reflex capabilities of the patients including the pin prick and the light touch.
The 256 hertz tuning fork is used to test the different vibrations that emanate from the body of
the patient (Jay, 2000). It is also an important tool in the evaluation of conductive versus
neurological hearing of the patient. The use of the tool includes placing it in either cold or warm
water so as to maintain a stable temperature, wiping the water from the tool and then placing the
