Introduction
Ben & Jerry's is an ice cream giant headquartered in Vermont, in the US. It is a top
manufacturer of sorbets, ice creams, and frozen yogurts among other products. The founders
were passionate about foods and were inspired by this to start a business on the same. Though
they had little capital and know-how, their desire to integrate some novel ideas with old-
fashioned values yielded results through the creation of a phenomenal ice cream maker called
Ben & Jerry's (Cummings & Worley, 2014). The firm, however, started experiencing some
internal conflicts between the founders and management due to different objectives and
priorities. The current paper will examine the case to identify the central issues, evaluate the
available alternatives and recommend the most suitable measures to be taken.
Case Facts
The current case at Ben and Jerry’s reflects an attempt to react to issues facing the
organizational leadership. The initial conditions in the firm are inclined towards a social mission.
The company has been making regular generous donations as a way of giving back. They have
also been actively involved in social and community action groups, socially responsible
marketing, peace campaigns, and promotion of local suppliers (Cummings & Worley, 2014).
The management team and the founders have some conflicts regarding how the overall business
strategy to be adopted by Ben and Jerry's. While the founders preferred a relaxed business
environment with an inclination towards a social mission, the management favored a staunchly
structured business strategy akin to the typical American corporate culture. Particularly, Ben and
Jerry's prefer a fun environment, but Chico is a bit conservative and tries to adopt the slow,
