Technology in Boundary-Less Policing
Boundary-less policing refers to technology-based interventions that law enforcers apply
to prevent crimes and terrorism. It is worth mentioning that technology has played a crucial role
in the criminal justices system by providing better and efficient ways for law enforcers to
maintain law and order in the community. One should note that technological advancement has
worked wonders for law enforcement individuals across the United States and worldwide. For
example, the introduction of the Geographic Information System, GIS, or Crime-mapping
software was established to help in updating crime maps. The software is widely applied in the
United States to identify hot spots or enhance crime analysis by law enforcers in different
departments (Schmalleger & Worrall, 2010). It is vital to point out that GIS software in policing
helps researchers visualize data, validate theories, and assess human behaviour over geographic
space. Thanks to the GIS software, one should also understand that different law enforcement
agencies are making their crime statistics more accessible.
Geographic profiling is another technological component in the law enforcement sector
that relies on crime-mapping technology by mapping connected criminal activities to establish
the residence locations of offenders. Geographic profiling is used in several illegal acts such as
rape, murder, auto theft, and robbery (Schmalleger & Worrall, 2010). It is worth mentioning that
geographic profiling can be effectively utilized with the database applied in tracking serial
offenders. For example, the office of the Attorney General of Washington uses the Homicide
investigation and Tracking System, HITS, which connects various databases, including parole
records, sex offender records, and gang files, to be searched and analyzed simultaneously. When
an agency has a significant crime in its jurisdiction, the law enforcers load the case in the central
system, which scans every database to get the links on possible suspects.
