Factorial Design Question
How are Punnet Squares reminiscent of a factorial research design with multiple IVs and
why?
Punnet Squares can be considered reminiscent of factorial design in that they are
normally employed in genetics to assess the likelihood of passing on a given trait from parents to
the next generation. This is because it is possible to predict or study probability of an offspring to
inherit a certain trait from the parents using the parents genotypes (e.g. XY for male and XX for
female) as the variables just as factorial designs employs multiple independent variables to study
a given phenomenon. Additionally, Punnet Squares resembles the basic factorial designs which
employ two factors (2*2) (“Research Methods in,2015). Most critically, both Punnet Squares
can be used to find a solution to genetic related problems.
For instance, consider the problem below:
In genetic context, the chance of getting a female or male is 50 % for a female and 50% for a
male. Using Punnett square and factorial method, validate or invalidate
Solution
Using factorial:
P XX * XY
F1 XX XY XX XY

Surname 2
This gives : 2XX : 2 XY
Using Punnett Square
XX
XY
XX
XY
Also, this gives: 2XX : 2XY
Thus proven - The claim is valid: 50 % for female and 50% for male.
