New Jersey Woman (Wife of a merchant and a mother of two children)
Identity
As a wife of a merchant, it is clear that the woman sees her husband rarely due to his
business operations. Merchants were very important during this period and helped in maintaining
the economy (Brown & Don n.p). They enabled the transportation of bulk goods from one point
to another. Merchants had to spend a lot of time away from their families so that they could do
business. The woman has, therefore, been left by the husband with the two children. Her life is
good as she is provided for by her husband. Merchants made a good amount of money most of
which was given to their families or invested in the business. The woman, therefore, can afford
all the basic needs such as food, water, clothing, and shelter. The income at the time is not that
good due to the revolutionary was disrupting her husband's business.
Despite all this, there are many hardships that are faced due to the ongoing revolutionary
war. It endangers her and her children due to the lack of adequate security. Her husband’s stock
is cutting down, and the returns are not favorable. Therefore, the whole family has to adjust to a
new lifestyle that’s harder. The woman is faced by more problems due to the difficulties.

1. How did the American Revolutionary War and its aftermath affect you? Are you better
off in 1783 than you were in 1775?
Oh God, the war! Since the war started, we have been in the middle of British forces that are
pursuing Washington. They ended up being holed in Pennsylvania, and it has caused us a lot of
problems. The battle at Monmouth later occurred during the period. As for my husband and me,
we did not agree or take this ‘Liberty' thing. We also remained home after others left for Halifax.
We have two children, and we have been trying very hard to ensure that they are safe. Most
people have lost their children due to the ongoing revolutionary war. Personally, I think we are
better off in 1783 than in 1775. At least the war is coming to an end, and we will have our
government. Less taxation will help improve our business and ensure that our children can get
what they want.
2. What are your views on slavery before and after the war?
This state doesn't have slaves. We also do not talk about anyone who has slaves and opts to
respect their decisions. We are God fearing people in this region.
3. What are your views on the role of women before and after the war?
Women before the war were restricted to household chores. We did not hold anything that
significant. During the war, women were able to be given the work of cooks, nurses, and maids.
Some women even joined the military. The roles of women have changed and become more
important to the society than before.
4. What role do you see for Indians on the frontier after the war?
