LACK OF DEMOCRACY IN THE MODERN MIDDLE EAST 2
Lack of Democracy in the Modern Middle East
Introduction
According to Mark (2014), democracy is a term that is translated from its Greek which
means, Rule by people”. It is not only seen as an ultimate ideal whereby modern civilizations
are working hard to preserver or create it but it exists in most of the nations in the world that are
economically stable. The system of democracy allows representation which is extensive and
includes many people including their views with purposes of positively contributing towards the
fair and just society functioning. Democracy has a lot of long term benefits as compared to
countries that lack this kind of governance. As much as Middle East is a region rich of business
opportunities including their advanced technology, the citizen’s views and ideas do not matter or
rather, they do not exist in the modern Middle East because of their system of governance which
lacks democracy (Guazzone, 2016).
Beaumont, Blake and Wagstaff, (2016) recognize that the general lack of democracy in
the modern Middle East has been mostly blamed on the structure of economies of the region.
Due to lack of democracy in the modern Middle East region, there are inadequate economic
preconditions. One of the most evident and common socio economic practices which seem not to
advance at all is the fact that the public sector is currently the primary employer in this region
(Mark, 2014). Also, the modern Middle East does not depend on their taxation income in their
governance but the state mostly depends on the rents which is usually an ownership reward of
the States’ natural sources such as the wealth of oil in Gulf countries. In other words, the rent is
the income earned from the gift of the State’s nature. This has resulted to the current status of the
region as there has been no advancement neither has there been room for allowing democracy
