The following are the item writing guidelines
a) Short-answer items are suitable for assessing the students knowledge about the topic taught.
It has the following writing guidelines i. Use of direct questions rather than incomplete
sentences. It helps to avoid chances of confusion among students thus a direct question is one
that lacks ambiguity e.g. circle the best or correct answer of each multiple choice.
ii. Nurturing concise responses. It requires students to be precise and exact to the point e.g. the
test requires students to write an essay about what is validity and reliability.
iii. Positioning blanks. Help in lining up all response items to the right-hand margin so as to
provide order in student responses. For example, all multiple choice questions are indented to the
right.
iv. Limiting blanks guideline requires that for an incomplete type of short answer items; use
only one or two blanks e.g. from our test question 1 to 5 it has only one blank that allows a
student to write a response. More than two blanks in an incomplete sentence may confuse a
student in finding an answer.
v. Inducing linear equality. It is a rule that ensures that students do not get a clue on how long
an answer is. It happens in cases where a teacher provides short lines for lines for short answers
