Multiplexing technologies, error detection and control
Types of multiplexing technologies are three namely; frequency division multiplexing,
wavelength division and time division multiplexing. Frequency division multiplexing it was used
by telephone companies for long distance connections to multiplex several voice signals via a
coaxial cable system. It is currently applied when the bandwidth of the link is greater than the
combined bandwidth of the signals to be transmitted. Wavelength Division Multiplexing is
applied in fiber optic communications, especially for high capacity communication systems.
Finally, Time Division Multiplexing is a technique that is used to transmit a signal over a single
communication channel by dividing the time frame slots. It is used to convert low-speed
channels into high-speed channels in a synchronized mode.
In communications, it is always important to detect errors first before control is applied.
Once an error has been detected, then a control can be factored in to rectify the error.
