Causes and Interventions for Juvenile Delinquency
For decades, researchers and law officials have tried to answer the question of what
causes juveniles to commit crimes and in recent years they have tried to come up with
interventions to help rehabilitate the juvenile. Throughout the United States, we have turned our
focus of juvenile delinquency on rehabilitation. Through extensive research we know that with
most juvenile cases there are underlying issues as to why the juvenile is committing crimes and
this has led to the development of many strategies and intervention programs to help stop
juvenile delinquency.
When it comes to children committing crimes, one might think that there have always
been a different set of rules for the juvenile. “The truth is, throughout history, there has rarely
been an emphasis on the special needs of juveniles” (Bartollas & Miller, 2011). Juveniles that
broke the law, were treated, processed, and punished just like adults. In the Eighteenth century,
children as young as seven were tried and convicted in criminal court. During this time we had
children serving time in prison alongside adults and even some were being put to death. In
colonial times, it was the family’s primary responsibility to control their children; so young
juveniles, who broke the law, were often sent back to the family for punishment of their crime.
“The state, even in those early days, clearly was committed to raising its children correctly and
making them follow society’s rules” (Bartollas & Miller, 2011).
In the 1800’s, we saw a huge increase in urbanization and industrialization, which sent
people flocking into larger cities. The population growth in the cities brought with it more and
more crime; which meant we had more juveniles entering the system. “The concept of parens
patriae (the state as parent) was formalized by ex parte Crouse in 1838 and gave the courts a
