Introduction
Colleges are a tertiary stage of education that about in the United States. There are about
2, 675 colleges in the United States Individuals go to college after attending and passing their
high school and getting a high school diploma. This is called a GDE. There is a hierarchy to the
colleges in the United States. The highest ranked colleges such as those in the Ivy League require
more stringent qualification barriers than lower ranked colleges such as community or county
colleges. Entry into those colleges is determined by the merit of passage in the high school
examinations through the grade point average that they accumulated throughout their high school
education (Zwick & Sklar, 2005).
Colleges provide undergraduate standards for their entrants. Performance in these
colleges usually determines whether an individual gets to achieve their graduate degree choice or
not. This places a lot of pressure on the individuals that actually gain entry into those colleges to
learn the skills taught and more importantly, to pass the tests that are a record of whether they
internalized the skills acquired in school or not. This essay discusses the causes and effects of
failure in college.
Causes of High or Low Grades in College
The most common cause of failure in college is immaturity. This has very little to do with
the age of a person as they enter college. Rather, it has everything to do with the vision and
resolve of a person to pursue the academic goals of college education. Quite unlike when
individuals join college with the objective of pursuing sports, the vast majority of the of the high
