LAW ENFORCEMENT (OBSERVATION) 2
After a long drive, I finally got to my destination- The United States Disciplinary Barracks
which was originally known as United States Military Prison. The main gate has several lanes each
with a screening point, for people separate from the one for vehicles. I get to the que and wait for
my turn.
From my research and observations, Fort Leavenworth in Kansas hosts three prisons
including the USDB United States Disciplinary Barracks. This barracks also goes by the name
Leavenworth and also unofficially known as The Castle’, the only male maximum security
correctional facility and the earliest started (Defense, 2012) penalty facility. It is mainly for the
people who have been convicted with offences relating to matters of the national security and the
sentences for the prisoners are at least ten years. Inmates in this facility serve for nineteen years
on average.
The checking went on with keen screening to check anything that could raise alarm
according to the security officers who from the uniform I could tell were also from the department
of defense. They checked in the boot of the car, inside the car in all corners including under the
seats and in the dash boards. They also search the driver and any passenger tagging along. It was
so thorough it felt as if I was already qualified a suspect until proven otherwise.
I was finally allowed in inside the facility which despite its purpose and being an old place-
started in May 1895- it is well maintained clean and neat beating my expectations. However, the
facility is housed a building opened in 2001 and not in the original building. The initial walls were
renovated replacing them with bricks. It is ironically a beautiful place though I felt like an inmate
with so much security watching over every move at any given time. I had imagined to get watch
towers with guards, perimeter fence with a combination of electric and razor fence and large cabins
