A Brief Survey on Internet of Things
Introduction
Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the devices which are directly connected to a network (or
internet) for sharing data and information, exchanging messages, and communicating with other
devices over the same network. It comprises a wide range of important and advanced physical
devices such as surveillance cameras, printers, scanners, sensors, computers or laptops, and various
other communication devices (Bandyopadhyay & Sen, 2011). These devices are highly secure and
are under constant monitoring so there are fewer chances of intrusions. With the rise in the use of
technology, IoT is becoming an eminent part of our daily life.
With the rapidly changing lifestyle and fast upgrades in technology, everyone is bound to
use these IoT devices to manage their surroundings and communicate with other devices
efficiently. While at home or at work, these devices can make use of the internet to monitor the
activities, devices, and appliances at home, manage the systems installed, and keep track of
whatever is happening in the surroundings be it the devices or the people. There are security checks
to manage confidentiality, accuracy, reliability, and concurrency of the data being transferred over
the networks.
IoT has completely changed the way people worked or the way different processes were
carried out. It has moved people to live and work in a smarter way and get complete power over
their lives. Even in businesses, it provides insight into the system, a real-time look at how the
systems work, and feedback across all departments. The process of automation has surely
facilitated the businesses and provided a better understanding of the overall working models and
has also reduced the overhead costs.
The Internet of things has become an integral part of our lives now. It is being used everywhere;
some of the examples include the manufacturing industry, medical industry to aid the old aged
people or the handicapped ones, transportation industry, making the homes secure, textile industry,
all the corporate sector, home automation, agriculture, and many more. It has enhanced the process
of generation and production of data, goods, or anything with the help of the latest technology,
computer controls, and higher levels of adaptability. This new era brings flexibility in the
