"Urban Waterscapes"
In this article, Goh is introducing us to the physical and theoretical contours of
waterscape across cities. I like the fact that he has specifically delved into the threat of flooding
in cities especially Jakarta, Indonesia. In this context, he has enabled me to recognize the
conflicting ideas about floods origin. For instance, I have known that the threat of flooding
originates from economic and political resolutions made on land development, watershed
management, and many other elements (Goh, 2019). I have also noticed that flooding is also
compounded by cities' goals for transformation and development, as well as the struggles of
marginalized individuals living in riverine regions.
“The Problem with Solutions”
This article is very educative and it introducing us to how environmental design activities
have enhanced several landscapes, for many species. Despite the improvements, I like the fact
that methodological tendency has made the water landscapes to be exposed to recurrent
problems. As such, I have realized that solutionism, an idea embraced by Evgeny Morozov in a
bid for describing an intellectual pathology has been used to prevent floods. In landscape
solutionism, 3 interlocking ways are implemented. Firstly, solutionists neglect multiple elements
of landscapes that are socially vital though are hard challenges (Holme’s, 2020). Furthermore,
they reach for recognized solutions that barely fit in the context of the problem. Thirdly, they do
not engage with unsolvable challenges.
“Your Sea Wall Won’t Save You
This article provides a lot of informational truths essential in understanding climate
change risks. It is interesting that Yarinna introduces her audience to some of the cities in
