Introduction
Labor relations is the relationship between the management of a company or an
organization and its workforce, including how workers and managers talk to, behave toward,
and deal with each other. Therefore, labor relations are terms used to define the processes
between employers and employees, management, and unions to make decisions for the
organizations (Rothman et al., 2017). The decisions could be related to wages, working
conditions, working hours, the safety of the working environment, security, and grievances.
On the other hand, a cooperative is an autonomous association of people united to
voluntarily meet their daily economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations through a
jointly-owned and democratically-controlled enterprise (Zeuli et al., 2004). Therefore,
cooperative acts as an alternative business model based on a set of values and principles while
working to ensure its members' social and economic well-being and the community at large
(Kelly et al., 2009). Consequently, they meet the needs and interests of their members while
guaranteeing them the double status of being both owners and users of goods and services
provided by cooperatives. As a result, labor relations in cooperatives become a broader aspect
and require to be broken down into sections for proper exploration.
This essay will discuss labor relations in cooperatives in terms of three aspects. First,
the issue of union-employer relations in consumer and producer cooperatives. The essay will
discuss the historical development of cooperative ideology concerning trade unionism in
cooperatives and their democratic attempts to establish harmonious bargaining and workplace
relationships. Second, is the board of directors' issue in ensuring good staff relations while
respecting the authority and responsibility of the management? Since achieving this requires
clear guidance, the paper will outline the principles and system of policy governance that is
used to give complete guidance. Lastly, is the response of board directors to workplace
conflicts and employee concerns?
